| The omens for this Gala were not good from the off. Booked loco's D832 "Onslaught", D6700, 55019 "Er... some Deltic type name" and 55022 "Royal Scots Grey" were all struck off the list before the Gala had even started for various reasons. In the end it became an "East Lancs On Tour" event with D5054, 40145, 45135 and 47402 "Gateshead" all making the trip.
Compared with the previous two years, or in fact taken as a single event, it was a bit of a let down. I had been hoping for a few more turns behind 50027 "Lion" after its superb (no pun intended) run last year, but unfortunately the beast lay tranquillised in Grosmont Yard with electrical problems - so unusual for a Class 50!! - so I relied upon D200 and the small Sulzers for entertainment. To my delight D5061 was turned out to replace "Lion", as it had not otherwise been booked to work at all on the Saturday (for some bizarre reason). It was nice to hear the East Lancs stalwarts 45135 "3rd Carabinier" and 47402 get a real workout on the long gradients of the Moors line, but my run of the day was ironically with two NYMR residents, D5061 piloting D200. A louder combination would be hard to find in the UK! It was gloomy for much of the day and eventually started raining, so I didn't take many pictures I'm afraid. Hopefully next years event will be a bit more vivacious. |
