| There was a bit of a Scottish invasion this year with the Bo'ness-based trio of 26024, 27001 and 47643 paying a welcome visit to the Moors. It was a nice treat to see these fine loco's south of the border, providing people like myself a chance to experience what we would otherwise not see for one reason or another. Besides this the former Scottish Region machines do a great deal to replenish my nostalgia tanks.
The highlanders were augmented by a few bits and pieces from the NYMR's own fleet, plus a couple of loco's from the NRM. It was great to reacquaint myself with D200, as the last time I had her for haulage was on "The Corby Cutler" railtour almost exactly 8 years previously on the 4th May 1987. She was still great, the climb up from Grosmont to Goathland producing possibly the most incredible thrash from a "Whistler" on a preserved line I've yet heard. Conversely the other NRM loco, 47798 "Prince William" in Royal Plum livery, was a complete bag of spanners. It puttered along all day and didn't appear to want to haul anything heavier than a small bag of chips. Externally it was a wreck too, worse than many preserved examples and extremely shabby when compared to 47643. Likewise D200, while mechanically better, was showing signs of deterioration. Would the NRM let a steam loco get into that state, we asked ourselves...? A pleasant surprise was had when 50027 "Lion", not expected to be ready in time for the Gala, suddenly appeared at Grosmont station in the afternoon sounding very ready! It was hastily added to the roster and tailed D200 to Pickering where it was given the task of working the return. Which it did, in a way which is best described as "energetic". My day very nearly came to an unhappy end when the station Bert at Pickering refused to let me board the last train back up the line because it was "ready to leave"! Fortunately a mate was on hand to offer a fast car move (cheers Phil) and we made Goathland in time for me to catch 47643 back to Pickering. I lost a few miles of haulage but I should have got on the train quicker at the end of the day! You live and learn. |
