| This was an excellent gala arranged by the Appleby Frodingham Railway Preservation Society, utilizing two of their own loco's plus guest loco's provided by Corus, EWS and HNRC. The basic timetable was for six round trips taking a 6.75mile clockwise route around the perimeter of the enormous Scunthorpe steelworks site, then a seventh longer trip that would be more off the beaten track.
The Society only have a small site within the works, with an excursion platform and their own loco shed beyond. However thanks to a good deal of co-operation from Corus they are able to run trips along a good deal of the internal railway network, affording the general public a rare insight into the sheer scale of operations at the works. I was particularly looking forward to this event because, while I have "done" Corus Scunthorpe before, I didn't have a camera at that time and there are some sights here which I really needed to capture! Needless to say I was not disappointed, the weather was superb on the day and the organizers really worked hard to make sure everything ran smoothly. This was their annual diesel event, but the Society do several public tours during the year and I can heartily recommend them too! Have a look at their website: http://www.afrps.co.uk/ Loco's used during the event: AFRPS #2661 "Arnold Machin" (Yorkshire Engine Co. 0-6-0DE, 1958) AFRPS #3151 (Bagnall 0-6-0DM, 1962) Corus #1 (Yorkshire Engine Co. "Janus" type 0-6-0DE) Corus #4 (Baguley-Drewry 0-4-0DE, 1977) Corus #75 (Hunslet "Anchor" type 1100hp Bo-Bo) EWS 08393 (BR Class 08) HNRC D2853 (Yorkshire Engine Co. 0-4-0DH Class 02, 1960) HNRC 20901 (BR Class 20) Thanks to AFRPS and the people of Corus Scunthorpe for arranging the gala, and to Adrian Booth for the shunter info. |
